Originally conceived during a round of golf in 2006 and a discussion about giving to those in need, MonSTaR was born and has since grown into a registered charity that primarily supports sufferers of and research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND) while also providing funds to enable special needs teachers to work in mainstream pre-schools. This assists children with intellectual disabilities to socialise and learn with other children.
These charities were chosen as a direct consequence of the three founding members, Mark Golding, Hamish Pearce and Greg Hargreaves, all having experienced family members who had been affected in some way, either by MND or difficulties associated with seeing pre-school aged children with an intellectual disability being unable to mix with other children. Due to the high level of care needed and the lack of funding available The STaR Association is able to provide special needs teachers in order for normal interaction to occur.
The first MonSTaR Cup was held in 2007 and in its first 5 years has donated over $575,000 to The Motor Neurone Disease Association of NSW and The STaR Association.
In 2010 MonSTaR was pleased to welcome the Danny Bergan Memorial group into the Foundation, as their work to fundraise for MND NSW in memory of Danny Bergan was a logical fit. Danny was a lover of small children and lived with MND prior to his passing.
The launch of the Foundation’s Membership has provided an opportunity for anyone to become part of our Foundation as we seek to register 1000 members by 2012.
